Data is the foundation for cities in the 21st century.
Over the last five decades, data has become the new infrastructure for cities around the world. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has shed a stark light on the pressing need for strong data foundations for cities, especially geospatial data.
With more than five years of experience of working directly with cities, we at City Planning Labs understand the barriers that prevent full use of such informational assets, and facilitate change by building municipal capacity through our technical advisory services. Building and managing geospatial data effectively allows cities to make plans and policies that will work for their citizens, while effectively allocating limited resources. Establishing a robust data ecosystem framework allows cities to create better plans and craft sharper policies that empower and enable their citizens, while effectively utilizing existing resources to do more with less.
CORNERSTONE OF OUR APPROACH
Municipal Spatial Data Infrastructure
MSDI functions as the platform by which geospatial information can be organized, shared, and leveraged to tackle the many challenges of sustainable urban development. Human, legal and technical aspects are an integral part of the MSDI framework, and inform the strategic investments needed by governments to support coordinated data-driven planning efforts.
HOW WE DO IT
Built on four pillars.
At the heart of CPL’s MSDI implementation strategy are four pillars: Institutional Arrangements, People, Data, and Systems (the IPDS framework). Each of the pillars represents the key components needed to support the digital infrastructure that is the MSDI.
ENGAGEMENT
A 5-step approach
We adopt an ecosystem approach that leverages data through a range of tools and processes to support city leaders in making quicker, better, tech-enabled decisions. Through our approach, we aim to work with you to support city partners to establish strong data foundations with end-to-end assistance.
-
the maturity of the city’s data ecosystem and geospatial data infrastructure with our rapid municipal assessments.
-
opportunities for short, medium and long-term actions to establish a fully functioning data ecosystem and geospatial capabilities across city agencies.
-
the development of a roadmap with a clear action plan for implementation of the opportunities.
-
Hands-on support for the implementation of one-stop-shop data platforms and enabling systems.
-
agile, digital Urban Planning Tools for evidence-driven decision making, including training.
